Inquiring a Second Time
1 Chronicles 14:14
“So David inquired again of God…”
This story is quite unique. At the beginning of chapter 14, King David’s enemies attack him. He asked God whether to go and meet them in battle Directly. The first time God said yes and King David was successful in battle against them.
Later on, when we get to verse 14, King David is attacked by the same enemies again. Instead of assuming God will give him victory and going to meet the same enemies in battle, David goes to inquire of God again. This time God tells David not to meet the enemy directly, but to go around them and engage them indirectly. God helps David win the second battle.
This certainly grabs my attention. King David did not take his victories for granted. He made sure that he yielded to the Lord before each battle and was obedient. The Lord told him not to go and directly engage the same enemies the same way. David obeyed and experienced victory for a second time.
I think this story paints a wonderful picture of humility. It reminds us that although we have done certain things that have have worked in the past and had success, we should not take God‘s blessing for granted. If we pause to inquire of and listen to God, we might discover that His will is for us to engage a familiar problem in a different way.
I pray this: Keep us humble and help us to never lose our inclination to ask you for your direction, Lord. Amen.
