Hebrews 12:8 reads, “If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all.”

This immediately follows the passage that tells us to regard the hardships we experience while resist sin as God’s means of providing discipline for us.

Notice that I did not say, “God’s means of disciplining us” which would mean that the hardships are a result of sin. As Apostle Paul would say, “by no means” is that true. This passage is described becoming disciplined by hardships that we experience while resisting sin, “so you do not lose heart.” (Hebrews 12:3).

Disciplined how? Have you ever been tempted to sin while vulnerable and in pain? We all feel temptation as we face troubles, most of all the temptation to become distrustful. By enduring hardships without losing our faith and giving into sin, we discipline our mind to reject rebellion against God when things are not going our way.

May the Lord strengthen and sustain you with his incredible keeping power, so not one of you falls away.
